6th Biennial Conference

General Information

About the SEA
About the Society of Early Americanists: The interdisciplinary Society of Early Americanists furthers the exchange of ideas and information among scholars of various disciplines who study the literature and culture of America to approximately 1800. The SEA promotes the exchange of ideas and information among its members through an electronic bulletin board and a website as well as an annual Essay Prize, an active Women’s Caucus, joint research projects, meetings and conferences, and informal affiliations with a broad array of scholarly organizations, both within and outside the continental U.S. For more information about the SEA, please see our History of the SEA that  leads to an account of our interdisciplinary organization’s genesis.

Biennial Meeting Guidelines
The SEA hosts annual conferences. In odd-numbered years, the Society hosts an open-topic general conference. In even-numbered years, it hosts Special Topics conferences. To ensure maximum attendance at the conferences, the following rules have been adopted:

1) a member may appear on a panel in a substantive role (paper presenter or roundtable speaker or respondent) only once

2) a member may also appear as a panel chair in addition to having a substantive role on another panel

3) the Program Committee may ask that members limit their appearance on the program to just one panel in an effort to allow as many members as possible to appear on the program

Society of Early Americanists 6th Biennial Conference Schedule, 4-7 March 2009
The formal aspects of the conference will run from 8 am Thursday, 5 March through 6 pm Saturday, 7 March. Plans are underway to conduct a pre-conference series of events on Wednesday, 4 March, focused on the historic town of St. George’s in the north end of the island. A World Heritage Site, St George’s is the site of the first settlement by the survivors of the wreck of the Sea Venture, includes the oldest Protestant church in the Western Hemisphere, as well as a number of house museums, fortifications, etc.
